Hey, everyone! Give Hope says "Hi" from Kansas... We appreciate your blogs and notes. They are very encouraging and motivating.
Team Update from the flatlands:
We have comfortablly split into two 4-man teams - Team 1: Jason, Jared, Elliot, Tad; Team 2: Bob, Brodie, Dave, Ryan. Our entire team was faster than I expected over the Rockies, so we definitely feel like we are can beat our 6-day goal with a new TDL Record in sight (Grace Valley '06 - 6 days, 3 hours)! Of course, we are still pretty early in the race, but we did great over the mountains. It was nice to finish the Rockies in the light, something we haven't done in previous years.
So far, Team 1 has taken been out for most of the day shift, while Team 2 has been riding most of the night. We each take a 12-hour shift. Tad has been sick for most of the last 2 days, so we've been doing a 3-man rotation with Elliot, Jared, and myself through the mountains. Brodie helped for a short while on our shift, but his stomach problems were so severe that we sent him back! (haha ). All the climbing during our training has paid off, though. We rode strong, but we were hammered when we transitioned back to Team 2 last night.
It's now 6:41 AM Pacific Time, 9:41 race time. We just woke up, getting ready for our day through the rest of Kansas. Tad is back with us, so we're going to try putting 2 riders at a time on all the flats to pick up some speed. Forecast is 95 degrees today with possible thunderstorms, so we need to watch dehydration late in the afternoon.
Crew is a whole different story. While everyone has awesome attitudes, the effects of their sleep deprivation is showing. They don't recognize it as much as we do. Kristen is doing a great job as crew chief... It's definitely the hardest job in RAAM ~ even harder than the riding. She has already made a few crew strategy changes. I think the challenge is that we are moving so fast that it's hard for them to both sleep in a hotel and still catch up. We lost Lee and Kris for pretty much an entire shift because they were so wiped out.
This race is really crazy… the focus on keeping a fresh rider on the road at full speed is REALLY hard to do. You just don’t know what to expect. And that’s exactly what I love about RAAM!
Thanks for following us back at home! We’re glad to have you on the journey…
