I'd like to take a second to introduce myself & the reason I'm Racing Across America this June. I have never donated an organ, nor have I needed an organ transplant. I have the little pink dot sticker on my license, but I didn't really know what that meant until last year, when I participated in Connor's 5k fun run. Meeting TDL gave me a new inspiration. It inspired me to look beyond myself, and help others. It taught me to do my part, raise awareness, and have fun while doing it.
I learned about Team Donate Life from a family who has been there for me since the time I moved to Sacramento. Jared & Tiffany Ellison helped me grow as a woman. Jared taught me life skills (he was my boss at the time, back when I worked at RPM) and Tiffany taught me if I put my mind to it, I could do anything. That's how I see the Race Across America. It's something so big, so rewarding, something so beyond myself; that if I make it to the finish line, I can do anything.
Last year, I learned about Connor's rare liver disease. It broke my heart. Why is this happening to him? He doesn't deserve this. He's only 12 years old. So I emailed Jared asking what I could do to help. He directed me to the TDL website, and that's where I learned that a disease or transplant doesn't need to get in the way of living your life to the fullest. I was beyond inspired by all the different stories written by people who had either donated or received an organ transplant. I wanted to spread the word.
Then, while navigating the site-- I saw pictures of fancy road bikes. And that's where I fell in love. It was a new challenge. Something I had never tried before. After little debate with Jared about if I could actually keep up, I dropped the visa down at Kinetic cycles, bought a brand new 2010 road bike, and I was off.
Once we all started riding together, I got to know a different side of Connor on the bike trail. He passes us up on the climbs, he hauls around turns, yet he never complains. If you didn’t know him, you would never know he has a rare liver disease, and numerous surgeries to date. Connor will be the youngest person yet to participate in the Race Across America. I am beyond stoked to ride with him & the rest of the TDL team. He, like his mother & father, has taught me that NOTHING can stand in your way of your hopes & dreams.
Connor has a goal of raising $100,000 and I want to do all I can to help him reach his goal towards this cause. Every little bit counts, and I encourage you to pass this on to your family and friends. We ALL can make a difference!
